Interested in Majoring or Minoring in African American Studies?

We are happy to meet with students who are interested in adding a major or minor in AFAM. Students are encouraged to make an appointment to find out more or complete the paperwork to add a major/minor (see below for instructions).

Many of our students double-major in a diverse range of disciplines. In addition to a generalized BA in African American Studies, we offer three concentrations that are more closely-tailored to specific fields of study: artistic, historical and literary perspectives; political, religious and societal perspectives; and social and behavioral perspectives. Please see the Undergraduate Bulletin for our curriculum and course requirements.

Advising

Our department advisor, Dr. Awendela Grantham, is happy to help students with course scheduling, adding an AFAM major or minor, and applying for graduation. Both walk-in advising hours and appointments are offered according to Dr. Grantham’s schedule.

You may schedule an appointment here. This link can also be accessed from our homepage, via the “Make an appointment” link in the upper righ-hand corner of the screen. Appointments are typically offered a week in advance.

AFAM students who plan to graduate in December should make an appointment with Dr. Grantham to complete their graduation applications and ensure that they’re on track for graduation.

Are you on our mailing list?

Did you know that AFAM has a mailing list that we use to notify students of advising hours, events, and updates about course offerings? If you’re not subscribed and would like to join, please e-mail Dae Newman at newmanad@vcu.edu. You can unsubscribe at any time.
