Ancestral Remains Returned to Richmond

November 27, 2019

In 1994, human remains were unearthed in the course of construction on the MCV campus. Many of the ancestral remains, which were discarded in a well between 1840 and 1860, were of African descent.

After being discovered, the remains were sent to the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History in Washington DC for study. But now, they've finally returned to Richmond.

On Monday, November 25, more than 150 people from the VCU and greater Richmond communities gathered on the MCV campus to pay their respects.
