Q & A with Jocelyn McCall

Jocelyn McCall sitting in a stairwell.

Name: Jocelyn McCall
Major: African American studies
Future Goals: I plan to continue down the research path, work my way into a power position in the education field, possibly teach, and probably join a non-profit or create something similar of my own after graduation.

Students should consider African American Studies as a major because learning about humanities, especially Black humanities, is foundational to creating a society we want to live in.

Why did you decide to major in African American Studies?

I decided to major in African American Studies because I loved learning about history and in particular Black history. I was amazed to know that colleges had programs like AFAM and I went with my gut on picking something I am passionate about studying instead of what I thought would give me the most income. I came here as a Business major looking to be an accountant and I am so glad I switched right when I moved in because studying Black politics, history, and theory is what I am the most passionate about.

What is the most important information that you have learned in your major so far? And why?

This is a very good question. I would say a couple things, such as forgotten details about each and every Black political movement, the many layers of oppression and how it is continually recirculated into society through white supremacy, regulations and restrictions put on the community such as redlining (in a much greater detail than I was aware of before), and organizing and what it takes to organize and create a strong community that supports one another.

What are your plans for your career after graduation?

I plan to continue down the research path, work my way into a power position in the education field, possibly teach, and probably join a non-profit or create something similar of my own after graduation.

Why should students consider African American studies as a major?

Students should consider African American Studies as a major because learning about humanities, especially Black humanities, is foundational to creating a society we want to live in. The information we learn is valuable within our daily lives and in whatever career field you choose to do. Additionally we have people who occupy power positions who do not want to see critical race theory or the African American Studies department continue so take advantage of the department and the essential knowledge it has to offer.

Anything else we should know about your experiences as a student of African American Studies?

I have loved being within the AFAM department. I have met students from all over campus that have a major or minor and it has been wonderful to learn from and share my ideas with them. This is such a flexible major that allows you to take many different types of humanities, sciences, and art classes as well.
