Gabriel Summer Institute: Searching for Black Family Histories

This summer, VCU’s Department of African American Studies is hosting a weeklong day camp for high school students centered on genealogy and local history. Students will use local, digital and institutional resources to research their family’s history, as well as learn archival practices for organizing the data into a family tree document to take home.

2025 Black History in the Making Awards

The Black History in the Making Awards were founded in 1983 by Dr. Daryl Dance, the distinguished scholar of African American and Caribbean literature, who served as program coordinator during the 1983-84 academic year. Dr. Dance established the Black History in the Making Awards to recognize the achievements of African American students. Since the inaugural awards, more than 550 students have been recognized by more than 50 departments and organizations.

The 2025 award recipients were honored on February 25.
